There has been a new upsurge in homelessness among young Quebecers in recent decades. In 1996-1997, there were an estimated 4,000 homeless young people in Montreal and Quebec City. (2006-2009 Youth Action Strategy ©, Secrétariat à la jeunesse, Gouvernement du Québec, 2006)
According to Dans la rue’s 2005 annual report, citing the Cohorte des jeunes de la rue de Montréal, 37% of street kids suffer from depression, 63% have suicidal ideation and 8% have already made one or several suicide attempts. Among clients aged 12 to 24 who use the organization’s services, 63% are boys and 37% are girls (p. 5).
